Lt. Fridge pictures

We just got back from saying good bye to the man of the hour. Here are some pics of the 7 crew with Fridge. In front of L7 is a picture of the old crew and in front of the wall are the fella's Fridge runs with today. Again, best of luck to you!

Goodbye to "The Fridge".

Today is the last day for Lt. Darren Parker a.k.a. "The Fridge". We were just informed hours ago that the big guy is leaving the department after 12 years. He is spending the last day at his house #7 in SW Roanoke City. We wish you the best of luck Lt. Stop in and give him a hug if you are in the area.

C-shift sweating out our middle day

It's been a long hot middle day for the Melrose Misfits of C-shift. I'm not sure what today's temperature was but it was HOT. It's been steady running for the Medic, sitting on 9 while the Engine hangs on to 4. I had the pleasure of spending the last of 4 Sundays getting my "learn on" out at our regional training center. Now typically, I wouldn't be too happy about sitting in a classroom for 4 days but with Instructors like Battalion Chiefs Adkins and Manual, who could complain? Forget the endless chapters, the HOMEWORK, those color in all the dots sheets from DFP, the ENDLESS chapters, the HOMEWORK, reading assignments, 7 page papers in some kind of funny "format", the HOMEWORK, endless chapters, and lets not forget the 7 page essay and oh yea..HOMEWORK. With Teddy and Roger at the helm, it was actually not that bad. Here's a shot of Chief Adkins in action.

While I was gone (and due to Wheezy being off on vacation ... he's away at kick-ball training camp) we had a fill in from The Deuce (remember?? The Deuce because 1 is never enough...click here and scroll down). Anyway, we got one of C-shift's newest members FF/EMT Ward. They made a few EMS runs and then caught a vehicle fire. I had my camera with me this morning so they didn't get any pics but I understand Ward did a fine job. I guess the boys did miss me though because they had me a present when I got back. A little "Bling" is always good because it adds points to your street credit.

We opened the barber shop after dinner with Lt. Bugg wielding the shears again. Just like with Tyrone ( here and here )Things didn't look so good for Coon in the beginning...you be the judge

The good news is that it turned out ok. I was checking out my regular web sites / blogs this evening and found some really good smack. Anyone who knows me knows I'm sort of a FDNY buff. Well, firefighterspot has some GREAT vintage photos of the FDNY in action. Here's the direct link to the post, scroll to the bottom of the pic, look right and click view all images or just click here. I also found this really cool T-shirt over at the Happy Medic Again, scroll towards the bottom of the page and look at the right side bar.

You can purchase this shirt here
Well, that's enough for tonight, it's back to the hay fields again tomorrow. I have the Buckaroo in farm training as well as FD training. I'll end with a few shots from yesterday of the little fella helping out and doing what he seems to do best...EATING LOL

Stay in the house, if not remember to keep your members hydrated and cool. Get that gear off of em a soon as possible. BE SAFE! Capt. Wines

Additional pics.....

Middle day almost done for A-shift

It was pretty busy here today. Ran a few calls, got FF Noell some Intermediate time as well as FF Wheels some Paramedic time. Lt Good O ran to an officer class for a few hours tonight, after the company had some of Captain Weeks pump training this afternoon. Special thanks to FF Dixon Sr. for precepting the fella's. He has been there when ever they needed him. Good Job!
Captain Lussen and EMT-I Dixon Jr. were on Medic 101 today. They are seen in a MVC we had today in the pics. The maggots have retreated to fight another day, The beast got a bath and a few other minor things were done around here today. I have posted some pics of pump training and a shot of a surprise guest Lt. Crouch from #2. OOOOps sorry, the sleeves are rolled up and he is pushing out his chest so I thought it was Jason. No, it's Wheels having a little fun. You can tell it's him because he is so much bigger than our good friend Lt. (Guntar) Crouch.
I have also added an updated pic of the new 5. Finally pay attention to the hydrant buried in the bushes, that is what we call here in the city.....woodland firefighting! Good night everyone, stay safe and be careful out there.

A-shift Maggot invasion

We are up against the slow advancing nasty little fella's. They have crawled the entire length of the station, inside and out. We have beaten them down since shift break, but they keep on sending more waves of soldiers. I will try to update our status as the day goes on.

Less than 9hrs til 4 day!

Last day of the cycle for C-shift and it looks like we'll have a pretty decent 4-day as far as the weather goes. Today started out rainy but turned into a sunny and hot evening. If it wasn't Sunday, we were thinking about making some modifications to the Medic truck. They managed to be first in on 2 fire calls today. Coon and Rhett (filling in again from Lucky 13) have requested a booster reel or at least an additional water can. They were thinking and said that if we removed the stretcher and it's mounts, we'd have enough room for a small water tank and maybe some hand tools. Of course the added stress of operating such a piece of equipment may be more than some could bare so I told them we should just keep it simple. Right now all they really have to worry about or to remember is "sticky side down" (that's for putting on band-aids for all of our non-medical type readers LOL). All kidding aside, some of our readers may not know that our Medics are firefighters also. They respond to fire calls on the Medic truck just as we respond to medical calls on the Engine. They carry their turnout gear in the side compartments and even have SCBA's (air packs) on the truck. In most cases, the first arriving Medic units gets put to work fighting fire and an additional unit is dispatched once a "working fire" is signaled. That 2nd Medic unit usually is then assigned as a medical group. Our medics and firefighter / EMTs also rotate apparatus. Some days they ride the Engine, others they ride the box (medic unit). Anyway, the system seems to work well for us.
Today has been a day for appliance fires. We had a dryer on fire earlier today with our brothers from The 12th Street Express (#5) and Ladder 2. Then a stove fire tonight with Lucky Ladder 13 (Medic 9 arriving 1st with Coon providing an excellent size up). Not much work involved with either incident. Engine 5 did stretch a line on the dryer but the stove fire was out on arrival. Here are some pics from those two runs, sorry about the night pictures, I still haven't figured out this camera as far as night shots go.Not much else to blog about tonight. Were sitting on 5 or 6 and are hoping for a quiet night. We made a little change to the banner of the blog. We were playing around with the look and thought some color would look good. We didn't consult with the other shifts, so it may not last long. I will admit that it looks better than what I originally thought it would. Let us know what you think about it under the comment section. I'll throw in a few links for ya to wrap things up. These are a few of the sites I check in with regularly and you may enjoy, look here here here and here. I also hope you folks have taken the time to check out the Fire Critic . We added his link to our blog a few days ago. The site is looking pretty good and today he has a link for some company level training that stems from a Sacramento Ca. close call. Take his advise, set your company down and watch the videos. Here's the direct link as well. The last link I'll add is a really cool one as well. It's about a little fire buff ... little as in a kid... worth the read here. That's it for now, an update if worthy as usual. Until then, stay safe and in the house, lock up the women and children, we're heading on 4 day! Capt. Wines.
